The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden has been developing for 14 years and the continuous increase in activities requires recruiting a number of new roles including the position of Landscape Manager.
Our Living Collection is curated in designed landscapes that are created using natural rock and water features, engineering and earth moving. Extending to around 300 acres, the gardens will protect a significant Living Collection mainly propagated from seed in its expanding nursery. SBG continues to increase its scientific, public and educational activities with both national and international interest groups and partners.
Role Summary
The Landscape Manager will require specific knowledge, skills and experience to fulfil this role and benefit the project including specialist knowledge in landscapes, temperate plants and education and mentoring.
A genuine passion for their work ,an inquisitive mind, attention to detail and the ability to innovate will lead to success in the role and help to develop the project and their colleagues.
The role will report to one of the directors of Botanical Operations Limited, the operational arm of the SBG.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage work programmes to achieve specific objectives.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues, designers, partners and visitors.
- Promote the SBG and engage with specialist partners.
- Ensure adherence with the SBG Living Collection Mission and Policy.
- Provide empathetic, professional leadership to team members.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Hold a relevant academic qualification at level 5 (HND) or degree level.
- Have a minimum of seven years’ experience in notable landscape, botanic or garden projects, such experience to include people management.
- Understand large landscape design and implementation in theory and practice.
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of plants, nomenclature, cultivation and suitability.
- Be able to interpret planting plans and propose possible adjustments based on personal knowledge.
- Have a good understanding of soil science.
- Show dynamic and engaging methods of inspiring colleagues to engage, be productive and develop their abilities.
- Demonstrate drive and determination to achieve objectives, willingness to meet challenges, versatile problem solving and proactive work planning.
General
This role is based in the Isle of Man full-time and largely based outdoors.
The successful candidate will need to have a full driving licence as the role involves working at different sites on the Island.

The Project
The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden is a new botanic garden that curates its Living Collection in designed landscapes, shaped and constructed using natural rock and water features, engineering and earth moving. A collaboration including the estate team, designers, botanists and other specialists ensure that each landscape provides experiences and opportunities for learning, conservation and enjoyment. The wider estate continues to enhance the countryside by creating and establishing wildlife habitats that will define specific areas as well as developing a program of creating sustainable, regenerative systems for the environment and edible crops.
Role Summary
A Landscape Supervisor is needed to support the continual development of its landscapes, growth of the Living Collection and creation of a large, professional team. Reporting to a Landscape Manager, the Landscape Supervisor will be hands on, applying their knowledge and experience to a wide range of work including plant introduction and establishment, garden maintenance and mentoring. They will also be required to maintain digital records, help with procurement and be involved with team decisions.

Qualifications and Experience

Have 3-5 years of experience in a notable landscape, garden or commercial business, such experience to include personnel management
Understand large landscape maintenance
Possess competent knowledge of temperate plants and their requirements
Have a good understanding of soils and management techniques
Show dynamic methods of mentoring to encourage progress and professionalism
Demonstrate drive, determination and adaptability to achieve success

Estate Gardener – Posted May 25, 2026

SBG are looking to appoint a full-time estate gardener to join our existing team. The private estate in Santon has been developing over the past 14 years with several key landscape areas currently under construction. The position will suit someone who is enthusiastic about all aspects of amenity horticulture, landscape construction and the countryside with opportunities to specialise in any of the fields. SBG prefers its team members to understand sustainable development and care of the environment to enhance and protect the project.
The role needs someone who has a genuine interest to learn about plants, cultivation and can perform a wide range of basic gardening maintenance as well as operate machinery. The estate gardener will also be expected to participate in the seasonal maintenance and ongoing programme of development of SBG’s wider estate land. In addition to practical, professional gardening experience, the successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the ability to apply previous knowledge in supporting SBG’s targets of horticultural development, environmental awareness and care for biodiversity.
